First day with a new class today - much thanks to the West Gate Neighbourhood Fund!

State MP Katie Hall joined us at Yarraville Community Centre as we welcomed an eager cohort of culturally and linguistically diverse students, giving them a practical guide on how to survive in Australia's economic ecosystem 🌱
Co-design is key to making sure that the content that the Money Mentor program delivers is impactful, engaging and connected to the real-world circumstances of the participants. Hence, an important step in preparation for a Money Mentor delivery is to meet with leaders in the community group / organisation, understand the needs and challenges of their members and work together to design bespoke financial literacy education targeted towards supporting this cohort.

Recently the Money Mentor program received a grant from the Westgate Tunnel Project to work with the Yarraville Community Centre to assist new migrants navigate the Australian financial system. This involved simplifying key financial terms and products in addition to identifying and understanding the services available when looking for employment in Australia.

Money Mentor Program is ALL about building relationships

2025 marks the fourth year of the MM program and has been engaged by
Mount Alexander College and the third year by Altona College.

At Mount Alexander College, it is being delivered to the whole year 8 cohort in
their Maths classes.

Altona College has found that the program is a good fit for students undertaking the elective Business Management.

We're delighted to have these ongoing relationships and grateful to the staff leaders who continue to champion the importance of student financial literacy.

It was great to recently deliver the Money Mentor Program to over 700 students within the Year 9 and 10 cohorts at Bacchus Marsh Grammar across the Maddingley and Woodlea campuses!

We spoke about financial key concepts and getting a job with Year 9 students, as well as super, banking, analysing bills, and spending with the Year 10 cohort.

Thanks to Bacchus Marsh Grammar for the opportunity to deliver this incredibly important financial literacy program!

Understanding your pay slip is an important foundational step in anyone's financial literacy journey. The humble payslip stores valuable information about your finances - from your hourly rate, to your leave entitlements and superannuation - and in the Money Mentor program, Angela helps students navigate this in depth. Knowing your financial position, and your entitlements, is vital to achieving independence and confidence in today's often stressful working world!

Financial literacy is so important at every age, to build independence, confidence and security.

Earlier this week, Money Mentor program manager Angela visited Werribee's Eagle Stadium to deliver a talk to a group from Daughters of the West who were at various life stages and diverse financial backgrounds. While Angela shared some of her top tips for financial wellness, the group actively engaged with each other, sharing their own savings strategies - with everything from accessing seniors discounts, to switching banks.

It was great to see such an open, enthusiastic forum that focussed on empowering women through money management!

The Money Mentor program is all about providing practical tools to students and community participants, including those who are heading into the workforce for the first time.

Module 2 focuses on the nuts and bolts of getting a job: how to get a Tax File Number, breaking down the difference in work types, and (vitally) ensuring you know how much you should be getting paid! So many people start work without knowing the financial basics, so the Money Mentor program has been designed to target this knowledge gap.

Money Mentor program manager, Angela, writes about the importance of numeracy skills and their relationship with financial literacy in this month's edition of @thewestsider

"There are many things which influence a child’s capacity to learn. Family dynamics, peer group, school environment, and community are all important factors. As the old adage goes ‘it takes a village’ to raise a child.

When it comes to financial knowledge, if a child does not have the support of their ‘village’ to develop their long-term financial knowledge, it is vital that schools step in to provide equity in education. The @unitednations has even highlighted the importance of universal numeracy skills in their Global Sustainable Development Goals."

We are excited to be a recipient of the Victorian Government’s West Gate Neighbourhood Fund!

Thanks to this funding, we will be working with our partners at @yarravillecommunitycentre to co-design and deliver the Money Mentor program across four workshops for the inner west community in 2025.

The Money Mentor program exists to increase financial literacy in the community so that individuals can make informed decisions about money, while building confidence and independence.

The support from the West Gate Neighbourhood Fund and @westgatetunnelproject will enable us to reach new groups, and tailor our content to the community context of the Yarraville Community Centre.

So why is financial literacy so important?

Well, simply put - it builds more economically resilient communities with healthier, happier, and more confident individuals who can make informed financial decisions.

Boosting global education about financial citizenship helps reduce poverty, create more sustainable economic environments, improve social outcomes and liveability ratings of the world's population*

We're fast approaching the end of the Financial Year, and therefore it's an opportunity to review budgets and set savings goals! While we don't recommend keeping your savings in a jar, we do recommend checking out the Money Mentor website for information about our program, which includes details about the modules we offer on income tax, savings and budgeting.

In light of the recent Federal Budget and $300 energy bill rebate, and the ongoing cost of living challenges facing Australians, it's a good time to review bills.

💡Utilities services are quite competitive and offer you an incentive to incorporate numerous bills with them, whether that be in a form of a discount or voucher.

💡The next step is to set aside a few hours to contact these companies to see what current deals they have.

💡Be aware of bill comparison apps and services in the market that claim to do all this work for you to get you the best offer for your circumstances.

💡Once you have clarity of current bills, made effective changes to household consumption, and achieved savings through research and inquiry into the market deals, then it’s worthwhile setting aside some time in the future to regularly review these bills.

Stay tuned for more top tips for managing utility bills and how the Money Mentor program is here to increase everyday financial literacy.

‘No Poverty – end poverty in all its forms everywhere.’ This is a bold statement of intention outlined in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Given the current economic climate and increasing cost of living, is eradicating poverty achievable in Australia, let alone the rest of the world? The team at the Money Mentor program would like to think so.

We support this ambitious goal of ending poverty both at home and internationally through providing financial literacy education to many demographics, from students to adults returning to work.

Find out on our website about how we help people realise their financial independence and build their confidence 📈🙌
